WEEK 3

This week we talked about controversial teaching topics. There were so many topics that were presented. From the Obama speech that took place to teachers getting their license taking away because they refuse to teach students whose parents are homosexual. It was very interesting learning about all the different opinions about all of them.

Sex Offender, Former Teacher Gets 5 Years

A former Bartow High School math teacher was sentenced Friday to five years in prison for offering to give a 16-year-old student a better grade in exchange for oral sex.
In addition to prison, Polk County Judge Rob Griffin also ruled Isaac Tillis should be designated a sexual offender.
In June, a jury found Tillis, 30, guilty of attempting to commit unlawful sexual activity with a minor.
The Ledger is withholding the girl's name because she is a victim of a sexual crime.
The girl reported she went to Tillis on Dec. 18, 2007, to ask about doing extra credit work to raise her grade in his class. She accused Tillis of requesting that she perform oral sex on him.
Police were called, and they conducted a sting operation with the permission of the victim, school officials and the victim's family. The girl was fitted with a listening device and sent her back to Tillis to ask again whether there was anything she could do to raise her grade.
The jury listened to the recording of the girl and Tillis in the teachers' lounge. During the trial, the defense argued Tillis was entrapped by the girl and accused her of being the one who proposed having sex.
At Friday's sentencing hearing, Tillis offered a brief apology to the girl, her family, and his co-workers. Assistant State Attorney Mark Levine urged the judge to impose the maximum five-year prison sentence, saying Tillis exploited his position of trust and authority as a teacher.
"When parents send their kids to school, the last people that they should have to worry about are the adult teachers," he said. The girl's father testified his daughter continues to experience trouble sleeping and is worried when she is around male teachers. "She is just not the same," he said.

Good Teachers :)

Everyone has a different opinion about a good teacher.
Some may say a good teacher is someone who discplines
their students, or who lets their students do whatever
they want and whenever they want to do it. So it depends on
who you ask, because I'm sure if you ask a highschool student
their opinion would be so much more different then asking
a parent. A group of highschoolers starting from 10th - 12th
grade came up with ideas of what makes a good teacher.

Here are some things that we came up with!
  • Good teachers have to have a good attitude. No matter what the problem is, whether it's at home or other, there's no reason to take it out on your students. They look up to you, and if they see you taking your problems out on your students then they're going to think that it's okay for them to take their problems out on everybody else.
  • I know alot of the teachers I have I look up to them. And a few of them have had a big impact on my life. They have helped me with personal issues at home and different things like that. Me being a teacher, I would want to be a big part of my students lives. I want to be approachable and trustworthy.
  • Good teachers have high expectations for their students. They have confidence that their students can do it.

Teaching..So Much to Sayy :)

This year I'm taking a Teaching Methodology class. I've been in this class for two weeks now, & I'm already learning important things that have to do with everyday life. I've learned teaching skills & have already became alot more comfortable talking in front of other peers. It's just kind of scary when you first get up there & your in the spotlight, all eyes on youu..you can't mess upp, gotta be perfect. Nobodys perfect & its okay to make a mistake..I finally started listening to myself & have realized that. So now knowing this I can confidently get up in front of my class & talk about a website that I've made or a project that I've done.
